Drive-In Movie Car Speakers From 1948

The fact that this advertisement, posted on Vintage Ads, promoted "in car" speakers as "new" made me wonder what sort of sound system drive-in movies used before their invention.  I just assumed that in car speakers existed since the beginning of the drive-in.  Anyone know how folks heard the sound before in car speakers?
