Smokin' Ida Lupino

Film Noir Photos posted this 1947 photo of Ida Lupino practicing a folk dance with Director Peter Godfrey on the set of Escape Me Never.  This image leads to me ask the question:  Could anyone ever do anything in the 1940's without smoking?  One would think a smoldering cigarette in one's hand might make dancing difficult, if not dangerous.
