Paleofuture noted that science fiction writer
Hugo Gernsback predicted manned flame tanks in the mid-1930s, but revised his prediction by the mid-1940s to make the tanks unmanned robots controlled by radio waves. The Germans actually deployed small radio controlled tanks to act as land torpedoes.
