Bike Hackers Of 1948

There is a noticeable subculture among bicycle folks today based on the modification of bicycles for either practical or artistic purposes.  As these 1948 photos from Life magazine demonstrate, the idea is not new.  The pictured contraption was known to rotate its rider if the brakes were applied suddenly.
