When I was in high school, our physics teacher had a giant, rectangular, plastic magnifying lens; about 2x3 feet in size. He would take us outside, and demonstrate the effect of concentrating the suns rays by using the lens to melt pennies on the parking lot. It looks like a scientist in the 1940's was ahead of the game with this
sunlight focusing ray for military use.
