Boing Boing had a series of posts recently about animation and classic cartoons. BB Cartoon Circus: The Fleischers and Popeye has a quick blurb about the importance of the Fleischer studio in early animation, as well as an example in the short below: Popeye in Goonland. The quiet, muttering dialog from Popeye is often some of the best material.
